Going into Sadie my biggest concern was that it would feel rushed. No matter where the book is taking place or who Sadie (& West) is interacting with, you’re very easily able to visualise it/them. By dividing the book up into podcast transcripts and Sadie’s first person POV, we get both a textbook description of settings and characters as well as a more biased, personal perspective which really helps immerse you in the story. However, there’s something about the way Summers writes that just makes everything jump off the page. This is surprising because Sadie spends much of the book travelling around the US, meaning most of the places and people don’t get a lot of time to make an impression. One of the things that really stands out about Sadie is how real everything feels. I’m totally selling you on this one, aren’t I? Why You Should Read this Book A Realistic World Or more aptly: you’re going to enjoy reading Sadie even though it’ll take your fragile heart, break it into little pieces and then set those pieces on fire. Considering this book deals with poverty, drug addiction, neglect, loss, murder, and child sexual abuse, it’s pretty much the perfect example for which to break out a Ron Weasley classic: You’re going to suffer but you’re going to be happy about it. But as that tends to conjure up images of me running over hills, singing about the sound of music, that vocab may need a bit of an overhaul here. Normally, when I talk about my 4.5 and 5 star reads I tend to use words like ‘amazing’ or ‘fantastic’. Craig Russell (Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde, The Jungle Book). Also included is the spectacular short story ‘Ramadan,’ a tale of a young king of ancient Baghdad and the deal he strikes with The Sandman to grant his city immortality, with spectacular illustrations by P. But their journey through the Waking World has dramatic repercussions for their family and also for the relationship between the Sandman and his wayward son, Orpheus. 3 presents several key SANDMAN tales in a slipcased hardcover edition, including ‘Brief Lives,’ in which the Sandman’s sister Delirium prevails upon her older brother to help her find their missing sibling, Destruction. In this quietly wrenching memoir, Hsu recalls starting out at Berkeley in the mid-1990s as a watchful music snob, fastidiously curating his tastes and mercilessly. Rachel McAdams as Barbara Simon and Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret Simon in "Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret." (Dana Hawley/Lionsgate) The film is far more faithful to Judy Blume’s iconic novel than I had dared to hope. Relatable content plus decade-hopping can kind of do a number on you, I guess.īut never mind me and my wobbly ways: You should see the movie! It opens today, and it’s worth the half-century wait. I also unearthed the diary into which I scribbled my observations when I was 11 years old, the same age as the title character. In other words, I’ve just re-read “ Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” and watched the new film version of the 53-year-old book. My head is spinning in the way it does when time folds in on itself, and I simultaneously feel like both the former confused-elementary-school-kid iteration of me and the current confused-adult edition. The author in the 1970s leans up against a car outside her childhood home in Virginia. Though he’s technically a visitor in their home (as he claims no legal ownership of it), he has deemed himself king. He’s a large man who’s a heavy drinker and who can snap at any point. Selina’s mother’s boyfriend is about as disgusting and terrible as they come. The book’s depiction of domestic abuse can be pretty jarring at times. I’ll admit that the first third or even half of the novel is pretty bleak. But it’s the how and the execution (both written and illustrated) in this newest graphic novel from DC Ink, that makes the difference. These things are what make Selina Kyle, as well as Catwoman, who she is. Sure, a lot of her backstory in Under the Moon is very reminiscent of her classic history: The abuse, homelessness, petty theft. She also realizes, to her surprise, that there’s solace and happiness to be found in being a part of a group, and so she joins a pack of other runaways/homeless youths who support themselves by committing small crimes. After living on the streets on her own for a while, she discovers that the solitary life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Covers are by Giovanni Maisto, Brom, and Sean Andrew Murray.
